YouTuber Niko Omilana is so much more than a comedian

His new video is hilarious, but this man’s fight for social justice is no laughing matter

On Friday, YouTuber Niko Omilana posted a video that got everyone talking.

“I Pranked America’s Most Racist Man” saw Niko travel to Harrison, Arkansas, supposedly the “most racist town” in America. He finds out the main reason the town has this reputation is because the Ku Klux Klan – the American White supremacist group – regularly hold their meetings there. In fact, the national leader of the Ku Klux Klan lives in the next town, Zinc.

Throughout the video, Niko meets various local people who help him on his quest to find “the great master of the KKK”. One of the kind souls he comes across is Richard Rowley.

After agreeing to drive him to Zinc, home of the so-called “great master”, Richard, Niko, and his cameraman George embark on their journey. Richard explains that he’s currently on the waiting list for foot surgery. It’s something causing him daily pain, that he can’t afford to fix.

Here in Britain and across Europe, the healthcare divide is eased thanks to our welfare system. Unfortunately, it’s a different story for our friends across the pond. Last year, West Health and Gallup did a survey of 3,753 U.S. adults and found that 1 in 5 would not be able to afford medical care if they needed it. Not only did Niko call attention to racism, but he also highlighted another very real issue currently plaguing the United States.

In a heart-warming end to the video, Niko gives Richard a thousand dollars. He then promises an extra four thousand to help to cover his medical bills. “I was really sorry to hear what you were telling me yesterday. Hopefully, you can get your foot surgery now,” he says, as Richard pulls him into a hug.

Considering how much money these people make, it’s easy to dismiss this career path as ‘not a real job.’ But to do that is to forget the talent and work that goes into each video. Not to mention the worldwide audience they’ve each built from nothing.

This isn’t Niko’s first video of this kind. He often goes undercover to shed a light on the rampant racism in the UK. A few years ago, he went to an English Defence League march – our version of the KKK – and trolled the supporters there.

Combining comedy with bringing attention to injustice is something that seems to work well for these new-age comedians. This video already has over 20 million views. Young people make up a huge part of Niko’s following. So this could really help to alert a whole generation about serious global injustices. All whilst making people smile.

YouTubers often get branded as being self-obsessed and detached from reality. But it’s unfair to paint them all with the same brush. All Niko showed here, apart from his comedic genius, was pure generosity and a genuine commitment to important issues.

Perhaps he wouldn’t have been such a bad choice for London Mayor after all.

Those wanting to donate to Richard’s surgery and recovery fund can do so on his GoFundMe page.
